Things are starting to go Gabe Bunke’s way and his win in the FXR Pro 600 class at Saturday’s USCC Forks Equipment 100 presented by Simonson Station Stores and Drummer’s Diesel, Inc. was proof the Polaris racer is getting his program dialed in. Run mostly in town, the Forks Equipment 100 featured an 11-mile course consisting of tight
woods and terrain running mixed with a high-speed river blast
back into town. A front rolled out during the night and racers and
fans were greeted with blue skies, sun and temperatures in the low
teens Fahrenheit.

The day started with a parade lap led by two of the best cross country racers ever to grace a ditch. Former Polaris racer and I-500 winner Archie Simonson and career privateer Guy Useldinger, both Grand Forks residents, led the field of racers over the course to start the day. ‘Dinger went retro with his gear and wore his forest green ColdWave jacket that was given to him for qualifying for the 1991 Eagle River World Championship.

“Guy and Archie live in Grand Forks and let me know they wanted to get involved with the event,” said USCC President Pat Mach. “I thought, ‘What better way to honor them than to let them lead out the event?"

Shortly after the parade lap the Pros took to the course for the RydeFX Pro Open race. Arctic Cat rider D.J. Ekre was first out followed by Ski-Doo rider Bryan Dyrdahl, but the real story was
Ekre’s teammate Brian Dick who tackled the two-lap race nearly five seconds faster (22:57) than second place Polaris rider Corey Davidson (23:02). Polaris

riders Davidson and Bunke were both using their Soo I-500 sleds with mod engines, but the stock-engines of Dick and Ekre proved just as capable with Ekre taking third (23:12).

In the FXR Pro 600 final Bunke switched away from the production Dragon sled to the IQ600 race chassis. “The Soo sled I used in the Open class was set up for endurance racing so it was a little heavy for the tight woods stuff,” said Bunke. “Even though the Soo sled uses a Mod engine I actually ran faster with the stocker in the Vet 30+ class, so I knew I was ready for the FXR Pro 600 final.”

The Pros ran eight laps with one fuel stop. Sixteen Pros were signed up for the race and conditions held through the day making the final one of the best of the season. The tight, shoulder burning twisties in the woods tested maneuverability and rider conditioning while the river allowed for arm-pumping high-speed blasts. Bunke’s eight-lap time of

1:33:07 bested the second place sled of Davidson’s time (1:34:10) by nearly a minute. Dick landed in third place with a time of 1:34:11.111 narrowly edging out Dyrdahl (1:34:11.876).

For Bunke, it ended a long dry spell in the FXR Pro 600 class. “My last win in the Pro 600 class was in 2006,” Bunke said. “It’s been haunting me. I can’t tell you how nice it was to get this win.”

The Stud Boy Semi-Pro 600 class boasted 35 entries, one of them Arctic Cat rider Carly Davis, the first woman to race the Semi-Pro class at a USCC event. Davis finished sixteenth with a time of 39:05. Polaris rider Jesse Thelen won the class with a time of 36:53.589, narrowly edging out Ski-Doo rider Cory Grant who clocked a time of 36:53.953.

Grant got the best of Thelen in Fox Racing Shox Semi-Pro Improved with a time of 24:24.119 edging out Thelen’s time of 24:24.130. Ski-Doo rider Mike Lenarz was a close third with a time of 24:25.830.

The next USCC event is the Munising 300, February 27-28, in Munising, Michigan.
