Bunke Takes Second Win At Seven Clans Warroad 100

There’s something to be said for having the home field advantage. For #74 Gabe Bunke (right) at the USCC Seven Clans Warroad 100 Presented by Polaris having the home field advantage may just be what sealed the deal for him.

Polaris rider Bunke took the win right in Polaris’ back yard, with Warroad, Minnesota, just a few miles down the road from the home base for Polaris, Roseau, Minnesota.

Temps in the mid-30s greeted racers and fans for the one-off Sunday event. The race featured an 8.5-mile course run mostly along the shores of Lake of the Woods. In USCC fashion, the course was well-marked and extremely challenging with a mix of shoreline, woods, bogs, twisty lake sections and short, half-mile straights where racers could find some speed. And, also in USCC fashion, it only got rougher as the day wore on with long bump stretches and some big holes developing.

“When we make a course we like to bring a challenge to the racers and this weekend was no exception,” said USCC President Pat Mach. “The course was short but there was plenty of snow so it got whooped-out early in the day and stayed that way.”

Arctic Cat rider #52 D.J. Ekre (right) continued his domination of the Ryde FX Pro Open class to start the day. He took his 4th the win of the season with a three-lap time of 25:41, besting Ski-Doo rider Bryan Dyrdahl [25:42] by almost a second. Arctic Cat rider and

Ekre teammate Brian Dick took the third spot with a time of 25:48. Bunke’s luck didn’t look good early as his Polaris suffered a mechanical issue in the Ryde FX Pro Open class to start the day.

Bunke went to work getting his sled ready for the day’s final race, the FXR Pro 600 class. He and his mechanics Jeff Klein and Matt Burkhardt swapped his entire setup over to fellow Polaris rider Ken Christensen’s sled.

“We figured we had nothing to lose so we went to work swapping everything over,” said Bunke. “I took it for a test run up and down the ditch and it worked, so it turned out good and I can’t thank those guys enough!.”

So good that Bunke set the pace in the Pro 600 final logging a 10-lap time of 1:32:37. While Bunke would still have won the class, he was helped out a little when riders behind him got penalized for missing course markers. Ekre [1:33:08] finished second with Polaris riders Corey Davidson [1:33:46] in third and Aaron Christensen
[1:34:09] in fourth. Next came Arctic Cat riders Brian Dick [1:34:10], Ryan Huston [1:35:15] and Chad Lian [1:37:17].

“The win in Grand Forks was sweet,” said Bunke. “But this win was just as sweet. It’s nice to end the season with a win. I’m looking forward to next year.”

As with the Pro classes, Arctic Cat and Polaris split wins in the Semi-Pro classes with Cat rider Chad Kyllo taking the win in the Fox Racing Shox Semi-Pro Improved class with a three-lap time of 26:18. Polaris rider Derrick Gust too the win in the Stud Boy Semi-Pro Improved class with a four-lap time of 38:12.

Yamaha rider #432 Ryan Greening (above left) took his third win of the season in the Yamaha Sport 85 class with a three-lap time of 32:11. Ski-Doo got its share of wins too with Erik Dahl winning the three-lap Newman’s Sled Bed Amateur Improved race with a time of 27:59 and #55 Jim Sobeck (above right) taking the win in the three-lap Action Graphics Legends 50+ class with a time of 27:47.

The United States Cross-Country Snowmobile Racing Association (USCC) is based out of Minto, ND and attracts more than 200 professional and amateur snowmobile racers to each of its events. The USCC series is North America’s premier form of cross-country snowmobile racing; it is the only racing organization that sanctions events comprised entirely of terrain cross-country races.
