Wins Grafton 100

(January 3, 2011) - Corey Davidson took his first FXR Pro 600 win since
2007 on Sunday, January 2 at the USCC Grafton 100. It was a crazy opening
weekend for the USCC National Guard Cross-Country Snowmobile Racing
Championship with back-to-back blizzards in the area that closed all
major interstates and forced the USCC to postpone the Grand Cities 100
scheduled for January 2 and push back the Grafton 100 to Sunday, January
2. The race was also made a non-points race because there were racers
who were not able to make it to the event due to road closures.
Despite all the bad
weather leading up to the race, Sunday dawned clear and cold and the
Grafton course, a perennial favorite amongst USCC competitors, boasted
tons of snow which made for a rough, challenging ride as the day wore
on. The 14.5-mile course featured a mix of twisting river, tight woods,
wide open fields and drifted ditches and tree lines. Arctic Cat rider
and 2010 Pro Open points champion D.J. Ekre picked up where he left
off last season by winning the Arctic Cat Pro Open class with a time
of 33:43.110, besting teammates Ryan Simons (33:43.538) and Brian Dick
(33:44.275).
Twenty-four Pros
lined up to compete in the final event of the day, the 3-lap FXR Pro
600 race. The course had become fairly rough and even most of the
straight sections were full of square-edged bumps that were pitching
riders side-to-side. After the first lap Ross Erdman, back on Ski-Doo
after spending time on a Yamaha the past two seasons, had a six-second
lead on the field and his first lap held as fast lap of the race (17:39.233).
He was the first to fall victim to the course and had a get-off causing
him to lose his lead. FXR Pro 600 favorite Ekre was slowed because
he had to stop for new goggles after getting roosted with water and
slush on the river. Dick pulled off after he blew shock. Top Pro Gabe
Bunke set some fast lap times but crashed and bent his bulkhead.
As the riders
entered the final lap, Simons had a lead in the 8-9-second range with
Aaron Christensen about a second behind him. About five miles from
the finish Christensen crashed and that allowed Davidson to get by
him on the time slips. Then, about two miles out, Simons had a big
get-off and Davidson was able to get by him on the time slips and
take the lead. A clean race and consistent riding earned Davidson
the win with a time of 54:10.716. He was followed by Simons (54:24.763),
Christensen (54:29.535), Garth Kaufman (54:41.787), Dan Ebert (54:50.226),
Justin Tate (54:50.964), Ross Erdman (55:11.213), D.J. Ekre (56:03.304),
Ryan Huston (56:20.656) and Zach Pattyn (57:13.249). Davidson also
logged the second fastest lap time (17:44.319).
Bob Menne IV won
the Ski-Doo Semi-Pro 600 race with a time of 58:24.398, besting Ryan
Greening (58:58.383) and Chad Kyllo (59:02.993). Kyllo won the AMSOIL
Semi-Pro Improved race with a time of (34:54.240), beating Greening
(35:04.253) and Cole Nymann (35:22.728).
"Despite
the weather, the Grafton 100 turned out to be one of the best events
in USCC history," said USCC President Pat Mach. "I would
guess about a third of the racers who signed up weren't able to make
it because if the road closures, but we still almost beat our record
for racers. It just shows how dedicated everyone is to this sport."
