(January 16, 2011) - Veteran racer Corey Davidson took his second
straight USCC FXR Pro 600 win this past Saturday, January 15, 2001,
at the USCC National Guard Cross-Country Snowmobile Championship race
in Grand Forks, ND. Over 200 racers showed up to compete at the Simonson
Station Stores Grand Cities 100 on what turned out to be a cold,
clear day after a string of days with snow showers. Temperatures held
in the single digits below zero Fahrenheit all day and a steady breeze
put wind chills in the -20 Fahrenheit range. That didn't stop the
record number of USCC racers from putting on a great show of cross-country
racing for the spectators sitting in cars lining the course route
or for those watching and listening online at www.usccracing.com.
The 12-mile course
began behind Revolutions
Powersports, host for the event, and followed ditch, treeline,
powerline and fields. There was good snow and plenty of drifted areas
that made for challenging riding. As the day wore on, the course became
really whooped-out making for exciting viewing for fans.
The day started
with Ski-Doo racer Tyler Aklestad winning the Arctic Cat Pro Open
race. Aklestad, who hails from Palmer, AK, left first in the field
of 19 Pro Open riders and set a blistering pace. After two laps he
was some 10 seconds clear of second place rider Aaron Christensen
(Pol) posting a time of 21:50.630 to Christensen's 22:00.719. Veteran
snocross rider and former Winter X Games gold medalist Justin Tate
(Pol) was third and (22:01.567), Christian Brothers Racing/Arctic
Cat rider D.J Ekre was fourth (22:04.840) and Ski-Doo rider Ross Erdman
was fifth (22:11.199).
The last race
of the day was FXR Pro 600 and 26 Pro riders lined up to take the
green flag. Attrition was low as only five riders dropped out with
DNFs. As he did at the USCC race in Grafton two weeks prior, Davidson
set a blazing fast pace using his smooth riding style and unique course
lines to steadily pull time on the rest of the field. Davidson completed
the four laps with a time of 45:47.849, besting second place Christian
Brothers/Arctic Cat rider Ryan Simons by nearly 10 second (45:57.239).
Simons was backed up by his teammate D.J. Ekre, who took third with
a time of 46:05.813. After Ekre came Christensen (46:13.757; Pol),
Cory Davis (47:07.615; Cat), Garth Kaufman (47:12.256; Cat), Gabe
Bunke (47:32.308; Pol), Logan Christian (47:46.549; Cat), Brian Dick
(48:03.453; Cat) and Cody Kallock (49:22.983).
Thirty-two riders
lined up for the Ski-Doo Semi-Pro 600 class with Arctic Cat rider
Ryan Greening taking the win with a four-lap time of 48:38.126, besting
Chad Kyllo (49:13.884; Cat), Nathan Moritz (49:34.854; Cat) and Bobby
Menne IV (49:58.969; Pol).
Dustin Isaak (38:01.903;
Cat) won the National Guard Class, which featured all National Guard
members, besting Marshall Polsdofer (43:24.579; Yam), Tyler Palya
(58:34.717; Cat) and Michael Selnes (Doo).
It was a noteworthy
day because the USCC hosted the most racer ever seen at one event
in the eight seasons it has been hosting cross-country racing.
"It's exciting
to see so many names on the entry lists," said USCC President
Pat Mach. "I think it shows cross-country snowmobile racing is
making a solid comeback."

50+; C.J. Vandeputte (Cat), Woody's Sport 600 (Cat); Tyler Johnsrud
(Cat), Recreational Salvage Expert 85 Improved; Jay Ilstrup (Cat),
Yamalube Sport 600 Improved; Luke Perrault (Cat), C&A Pro Trail
