Minto, ND
(February 14, 2011) - In the first USCC event since the passing of
its founder and President Pat Mach, racers hit the course at the Chase
On The Lake Walker 100 in Walker, Minnesota, in honor of Mach. Jesse
Strege filled in as Race Director for the event and led the driver's
meeting in prayers for Mach and his family. The first-time event was
a fitting tribute to Mach as it turned out to be a great venue that
featured some fantastic racing.
Sunday, February
13, dawned unseasonably warm, with temperatures topping the 30-degree
Fahrenheit mark even as the sun began to peek over the horizon. Temperatures
climbed above 40-degrees during the day and warm winds blew across
Leech Lake. The 18-mile course wound around the swamps and shoreline
of Walker Bay and also took riders on some blazing fast runs across
the bay. The snow was deep and the shorelines and parts of the lake
got whooped out with other parts of the lake developing a fast ice
groove. It was definitely a setup challenge for the competitors with
arm-pumping twisties and tiring rough sections.
Arctic Cat rider
D.J. Ekre set the pace in the Arctic Cat Pro Open class posting a
two-lap time of 34:55.028, some nine seconds faster than the second
place sled of Aaron Christensen (35:04.413). Christensen was followed
in the finishing order by Arctic Cat riders Ryan Huston (35:15.857)
and Ryan Simons (35:17.783) and Justin Tate (35:30.269).
The FXR Pro 600
was the last race of the day and was set for 5-laps with a fuel stop.
Christensen was first off the line with Ekre giving chase. By the
end of the first lap Ekre had caught Christensen and the pair were
running nose to tail, but Ekre had already passed him on the time
charts. By the mid-way point Ekre had gotten by Christensen but Christensen
stayed on Ekre's snowflap and the pair set a blistering pace, pulling
over a half minute on the third place sled of Ryan Simons. By race
end, Ekre set a five-lap time of 1:27:14.908, some 24 seconds ahead
of Christensen (1:27:39.575) and nearly a minute ahead of his teammates
Simons (1:28:05.560) and Garth Kaufman (1:28:11.155). After Kaufman
came Tate (1:28:48.921), Huston (1:29:15.235), Logan Christian (1:30:20.416),
Corey Davidson (1:30:32.873), Gabe Bunke (1:30:51.933) and Cody Kallock
(1:31:12.890). Ekre's FXR Pro 600 made it a clean sweep of the USCC
Pro classes for the rider from Shevlin, Minnesota.
"My race
went really good," said Ekre. "The sled was working good
and I was able to really push it. It feels good to get the win."
Arctic Cat rider
Ryan Greening won the Ski-Doo Semi-Pro 600 class with a three-lap time
of 53:17.777, besting Cat rider Chad Kyllo (53:35.525) by some 17 seconds
and was over 50 seconds ahead of third place rider Bobby Menne IV (54:08.111).
Kyllo got the win in the AMSOIL Semi-Pro Improved class with a two-lap
time of 36:01.631, besting Greening's time of 36:05.487 and Menne's
36:17.806.
"In one way
or another we were all at the Chase On The Lake Walker 100 because
of Pat Mach," said Race Director Jesse Strege. "To go racing
so soon after Pat's passing is what Pat would have wanted. It was
a great day and definitely the therapy a lot of us needed after the
loss of our friend."
