2012 FUEL STOP FUEL CAN RULES REMINDER

The rules for fuel jugs have not changed for the new season, but just in case there are new racers who are unaware of the rules, here is the info again. This applies to classes that have a fuel stop at regular season races, and ALL classes, including Vintage, at the Red Lake I-500 since they all have a fuel stop.

FUEL JUG RULES

1) The LC jug pictured below is the ONLY approved fuel container for fuel stops.
2) The only modifications allowed are outlined further down this page.
3) Filler hose size must remain as produced. Larger hose diameter is not allowed.
4) Jug cap must be tight at all times during refueling.
5) ALL CANS WILL BE TECHED IN THE FUEL LANE EACH DAY.

APPROVED FUEL CAN MODIFICATIONS

After additional cold weather testing of the fuel cans, we have found some issues on a handful of cans. The issues found have been:

  1. The hose on some cans becomes very stiff when cold.
2. When held at a certain angle, fuel can spill out of the vent hole.
3. The cap fitting on some cans has broken under stress.

We have heard from many racers who say their can works great in the current form. However for those who are experiencing or are concerned about experiencing one of the problems above, you may perform the following modifications to your cans:

1) A replacement hose may be used. The hose MUST retain the stock ¾" ID and may be anywhere from 12" to 24" in length to accommodate different filling styles. We have tested an AG200 rubber hose which has remained flexible in cold weather during testing and can be obtained for less than $2 per foot. Racers interested in this hose can email the USCC for more information.

2) A 3/16" ID fuel line may be added to the vent tube to reduce the risk of fuel spilling when the vent is upside down. To do this, the vent hole can be opened slightly using a 19/64" drill bit. Place the fuel line into the vent opening and then secure the line to the can. (see photos). Silicone may be added to the line/can joint for extra sealing.

  3) If breakage of the cap to hose fitting is a concern, a replacement fitting of either plastic or metal may be used. However, the fitting MUST retain the exact same ¾" OD as the stock fitting.

YOU MAY LEGALLY USE ONE, TWO, OR ALL THREE OF THESE MODIFICATIONS ON YOUR CAN. OR, YOU MAY LEAVE YOUR CAN IN STOCK FORM. EITHER WAY, WE ENCOURAGE ALL RACERS TO DO SOME TESTING AND PRACTICE WITH THEIR CANS PRIOR TO THE FIRST RACE THEY NEED TO USE IT TO HELP MAKE THE FUEL STOPS AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE.
